Let’s talk bridesmaids. The long-standing joke of those hideous, tulle infused dresses have come a long way in the past few decades from dresses of years gone by. Historically speaking, many bridesmaids’ dresses of years past included yards of tulle, ribbons, and sometimes even hats!
The idea that the bridesmaids’ dresses should look any different than the bride, but similar to the other bridesmaids, didn’t really catch on until the latter part of the 19th century – as brides became more and more captured by news, photos, and pictures on their wedding days as technology emerged. Brides – as we all know now – wanted to stand out on their day.
All of this being said, bridesmaids’ dresses of today are (thankfully) much more on trend, and a lot less….fluffy. Deep blues, elegant maroons, and understated beige colors come to mind when thinking of bridesmaids in recent weddings I’ve planned. There are hundreds of colors and patterns that can suit your day and the theme of your wedding. Many brides have gone with different but similar styles, necklines, cuts and even colors to differentiate from the maid/matron of honor, or even just personal preferences, body types and styles of their bridesmaids. This helps create a variety of personalization in order to reflect your bridesmaids’ personalities while keeping a consistent theme and look to your wedding décor.
The bridal industry today, including but not limited to David’s Bridal, Kleinfeld’s Bridal Party, and others, is catching on to this by offering multiple styles and cuts in the same or similar color to create a variety of choices for you and your girls, who will be standing next to you on your big day. This creates less stress between your friends and family and what you’re dressing them in, as well as an option for everyone to express themselves. That being said, if you are more traditional and want the exact same dress for each bridesmaid, there is nothing wrong with that! Dresses are so versatile and choosing one that suits both you and your wedding theme can create some beautiful wedding pictures, and lets you truly shine with the contrast. You can visit my Pinterest board titled “Bridesmaid Dresses & Gifts” to see examples of a options such as necklines, backs, styles, and more.
Also pinned to this board are a couple of ideas for your bridesmaid gifts. Check them out here. Getting your wedding party a special gift on your day to say thank you for their support and love (not to mention buying that $300 dress and not complaining) is a great way to show your appreciation and love back to them. These gifts can vary from anything to use for the bachelorette party (peep those adorable wine glasses!) to gifts they can wear on your wedding day. Finding the perfect gift for your wedding party without going over budget can be tricky, but is something that makes a huge impact and creates a really great personalized touch for you and your ladies.
Overall, bridesmaids are a great part of a wedding, but can be challenging at times. Working within your budget to find the perfect dresses and gifts for them (and researching and building a Pinterest board with all things weddings) makes a difference.
