Congratulations… you’re engaged! Let the wedding planning begin! You’ve selected the venue, found the perfect outfit, picked out the flowers, decided on the catering menu, and hired your favorite DJ. Now it’s time to think about just the two of you and your ceremony, and the words which will convey your love for one another to all who come to celebrate your union, and share in your happiness.
When it comes to wedding ceremonies, you have some choices to make. If you share the same faith, chances are you may decide to ask a minister, priest, or rabbi from your family congregation to perform the ceremony. Some couples prefer a civil ceremony at the courthouse.
Another great option is to engage an officiant or celebrant to work with you to create a customized ceremony with words which speak to you both and the feelings you share. Couples often choose the latter option when they are blending faiths or cultures, or do not identify with one particular religion or faith. Ask your wedding planner to recommend an officiant they have worked with before, or inquire at the courthouse for a “clergy” or “officiant” list when you apply for your marriage license. The venue you select may also have an officiant they recommend.
With a customized ceremony, the elements you choose can be as individual as you are. You may wish to include scripture, blessings, readings, song lyrics, candle lighting, cultural rituals or customs, a butterfly release, or a wine ceremony. The choices are infinite! Your wedding ceremony should reflect your love for each other and the feelings you share. Working with an officiant to create a beautiful and meaningful ceremony gives you the opportunity to be an active participant in the process. Here are some questions to ask the officiant or celebrant you are considering working with:
- How long have you been an officiant?
- In which states/jurisdictions are you authorized to perform wedding ceremonies?
- What types of ceremonies do you perform?
- Will you travel to our venue?
- Do you have our wedding date/time available?
- What does your fee include?
- Can you provide us with a referral to a couple you married previously?
- What is your fee for the services we are looking for?
These questions, along with others you think of, will help you to determine the officiant that is just right for your wedding. Look for an officiant who will take the time to get to know you and will answer all of your questions. The officiant should respond to phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner, and also commit to reserve your wedding date and time on their calendar. Without an officiant, there will not be a wedding, so finding someone you both feel comfortable with and can rely upon with is essential.
Say “I Do” your way and create a memorable and unique ceremony for a lifetime of beautiful memories!
